    Description

Possible Lost Image of North Carolina Declaration of Independence Signer JOSEPH HEWES.
A unique and potentially historically significant daguerreotype of what is believed to be a lost image of Joseph Hewes.  This c.1845 daguerreotype is of an oil painting.  While it is not specifically labeled, when compared side by side to the known image of Hewes, there are some notable similarities (both images are shown together in one of my pics so you can make your own assessment).  The image clearly depicts a Colonial Gentleman who appears to be about 30 years of age.  This piece was acquired from a family in the Hillsboro, NC area, who stated that it was Joseph Hewes.  A few notable local historians and collectors have also looked at it and shared their opinion that it might very well be an image of Hewes.  The image itself is crystal clear, without any flaws or defects.  The case cover has separated at the hinge (see pic), but both pieces are here and it could easily be repaired.  The case measures 3-1/8" x 3-5/8".
I've done my best to describe the image, but if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.
