The EGR valve is a mechatronic product installed on a diesel engine to control the amount of exhaust gas recirculation in the intake system. It is a very important and key component of the exhaust gas recirculation device. Its function is to control the amount of exhaust gas entering the intake manifold so that a certain amount of exhaust gas flows into the intake manifold for recirculation. The egr valve is usually located on the right side of the intake manifold, close to the throttle body, connected to the intake manifold and exhaust manifold, and the degree of opening of the valve is controlled by the vacuum pipe to determine the amount of exhaust gas passed into the intake manifold. The working principle
The EGR solenoid valve has
three air ports
. When the EGR solenoid valve coil is not energized, the spring of the EGR valve will press the valve body upward, and the air port will be cut off. At this time, the intake manifold of the EGR solenoid valve and EGR The vacuum chamber of the valve communicates. When the EGR solenoid valve coil is energized, the EGR valve body is downward and communicates with the atmosphere port, and the intake manifold of the EGR valve is cut off from the EGR valve vacuum chamber. One side of the EGR valve diaphragm (the lower part is open to the atmosphere and the other side is equipped with a spring is the vacuum chamber. The vacuum degree is controlled by the EGR solenoid valve. Increasing the vacuum degree of the vacuum chamber makes the diaphragm overcome the spring force to increase the opening of the arch valve. The flow rate of exhaust gas recirculation will increase. When the upper part loses the vacuum degree, the diaphragm arches downward under the action of the spring force to close the valve and block the exhaust gas recirculation.

Testing with a Multimeter and Scan Tool

Step 1.
Choose the correct EGR valve
for the make and model of your vehicle. Check with your owner's manual to find the right one. If you cannot find the correct EGR there, check a parts manual or with an associate at an auto parts stores.
Step 2.
Let your engine cool.
Wait for several hours before you begin working on your vehicle. You can injure yourself very easily while working on a hot engine so let it set a few hours.
Step 3.
Disconnect the battery
. Use a wrench to loosen the clamps on the battery’s two terminals. Be sure to wait at least 5 minutes after disconnecting the battery before you begin working on the engine. You want the system to discharge completely.
Step 4.
Locate the EGR
. The EGR is usually located on either the top or backside of the engine. Consult your owner’s manual if you need help finding it.
Step 5.
Disconnect the vacuum line
. Twist and pull each line until they slide off the EGR valve. Each line connects with a specific port. Label each one so that you can easily reconnect them.
Step 6.
Disconnect the electrical cable
. The electrical cable is located on top of the EGR valve. Grab the electrical cable with your hands and pull it.(If the electrical cable is held in by a clip or clamp, use a flat-bladed screwdriver to press it down and release it.)
Step 7.
Use a wrench to remove the bolts on the EGR valve's mount
. Use lubricant spray on the bolts because they are usually very tight.
Step 8.
Take out the old EGR valve
. Now that you removed the bolts, use your hands to remove the valve from its mount.
Step 9.
Clean the valve base and passages
. Use a scratch awl or something similar to remove any carbon buildup. Clean any debris or building in the gasket case.
Step 10.
Install the new EGR valve
. Thread the bolts through the EGR and gasket onto the mount with your hands first. Then use a socket wrench with a swivel extension to tighten the mounting bolts when you seat the EGR valve in the engine.
Step 11.
Reconnect the electrical cable
. Plug the cable back into the top of the EGR valve using your hands.
Step 12.
Hook up the vacuum line
. Reattach the line with using your hands. Make sure that it’s tight to prevent leaks.
Step 13.
Reconnect the battery
. Attach the engine leads to the battery terminals. Use a wrench to tighten the bolts.
Step 14.
Clear your scan tool
. If you used a scan tool to test your EGR valve, clear any error codes related to the valve. Then test again to see if any error codes appear.
Step 15.
Listen for leak
